Arriving at Collingwood in 1991 as a father-son recruit, Mark Richardson carried the weight of a famous surname as the son of three-time Copeland Trophy winner Wayne Richardson. A versatile tall utility, he was regularly deployed as a swingman throughout his career, capable of presenting as a lead-up forward or locking down key opposition targets in defence. While he showed promise in attack early in his tenure, arguably his most effective football came as a disciplined key defender who relied on concentration and positioning rather than raw athleticism.

His time at Victoria Park was marked by resilience, as he battled recurring injuries and form fluctuations to carve out a 12-season career. Although rarely the headline act, Richardson became a trusted role player during the club's resurgence under Mick Malthouse, notably playing in the 2002 Grand Final loss to the Brisbane Lions. He retired in 2003, having successfully added another chapter to his family's significant history with the Magpies.
