Recruited from St George in Sydney, Mark Roberts was a cult figure of 1990s football whose career traversed three states before finding ultimate success. He began his journey with the Sydney Swans in 1985 before joining the Brisbane Bears for their inaugural season in 1987. After four seasons in Queensland where he often battled for consistency, Roberts was traded to North Melbourne in 1991 for pick 47, a low-cost exchange that would eventually be viewed as one of the shrewdest deals of the decade.

Affectionately nicknamed "The Fridge" due to his deceptive, heavyset frame, Roberts transformed himself at North Melbourne from a journeyman defender into a highly effective utility. Despite his size, he possessed a sharp football brain and clean hands, allowing Denis Pagan to deploy him as a pinch-hitting forward, a decoy, or even a mobile ruckman. He became a vital component of the Kangaroos' powerhouse side, culminating in the 1996 Premiership where he kicked a crucial goal in the final quarter to help seal the victory against his original club. Roberts retired in 1999 as a 200-game player who had maximised his unique talents to become a premiership hero.
