Bio
Recruited from the local junior ranks, Mark Shea established himself as a reliable defender for Fitzroy during a highly competitive era for the club. He primarily operated in the back pocket or as a full-back, where his discipline and close-checking style made him a fixture in the senior lineup. Shea experienced the highs and lows of September football early in his career, playing in Fitzroy's 1903 Grand Final loss before tasting ultimate success as part of the 1904 premiership side. Following that flag triumph, he crossed to Essendon for the 1905 season, instantly slotting into the Same Olds' defensive unit. He helped guide Essendon to the 1908 Grand Final, though he was unable to secure a second premiership medallion as the team fell to Carlton. A consistent backman who rarely ventured forward to trouble the scorers, Shea remained a first-choice defender until his retirement in 1909.
