Bio
Recruited from Bundoora, Mark Slater arrived at Victoria Park as a teenage goalkicking sensation who had dominated interstate schoolboys football for Victoria. Despite topping the Magpies' Under-19s goalkicking in 1968 and regularly booting bags in the reserves, the 180cm forward found his pathway to the senior goal square blocked by the prolific Peter McKenna. He managed just two senior appearances across two seasons—debuting as a 17-year-old against Geelong in 1969 and playing his final game in the opening round of 1970—before being released prior to the 1971 season. Slater subsequently carved out a distinguished career in the VFA, notably playing in a Division 2 premiership with Coburg in 1974, before returning to Bundoora to captain-coach his home club to a flag and win a league best and fairest.
