Recruited from Airport West, Mark "Bomber" Thompson became a fixture of the Essendon defence during the club's dominant era under Kevin Sheedy. A rugged back pocket and half-back flanker, he was renowned for his aggressive attack on the ball, uncompromising tackling, and ability to organise the backline structure. Thompson played a vital role in the Bombers' back-to-back premierships in 1984 and 1985, eventually rising to the captaincy and leading the youthful 1993 "Baby Bombers" side to an unexpected flag.

Thompson's influence extended well beyond his 202 games at Windy Hill, transitioning into a coaching career that reshaped the modern game. While his playing days were solely in red and black, he is inextricably linked to Geelong, where he orchestrated the historic 2007 premiership victory that ended the club's 44-year drought. As a three-time premiership player and a premiership-winning coach, Thompson occupies a rare tier in VFL/AFL history, celebrated for his tactical acumen and leadership qualities that delivered success across two powerhouse clubs.
