Bio
A promising junior from Altona North who represented Victoria at Teal Cup level, Mark Whitzell holds the distinction of bridging the gap between the club's South Melbourne heritage and its Sydney future. He made his senior debut as a 17-year-old at the Lake Oval in 1981, playing a solitary game for the Bloods before the club's tumultuous relocation north. Standing 188cm, Whitzell was a rugged utility known for his physical toughness and extensive tattoos, a visual rarity for the era that made him a cult figure among the faithful despite his limited opportunities. He struggled to cement a regular spot in the Swans' lineup during the club's unstable early years in the Harbour City, managing just 11 games over the next five seasons as he drifted between the seniors and the reserves. He eventually departed the VFL to become a standout performer in the VFA, finishing equal-second for the J.J. Liston Trophy with Port Melbourne in 1987.
