Bio
Recruited from North Ballarat in 1961, Martin Cross was a skilled rover and forward who possessed a sharp right boot and an elusive ability to baulk opponents in traffic. He made an immediate impact at Princes Park, averaging exactly a goal a game across his three-season tenure, but often found himself fighting for a permanent spot in a strong midfield brigade. Cross was selected as the 20th man for the 1962 Grand Final, watching from the bench as the Blues fell to Essendon in a disappointing decider. While his VFL career was relatively short, he went on to become a titan of country football in the Ovens & Murray League, coaching for a record 21 years and leading both Myrtleford and North Albury to premierships. His connection to Carlton remains vital in the modern era, with his great-grandsons, Ollie and Elijah Hollands, both carrying on the family legacy in navy blue.
