Originally rookie-listed from Sturt, Martin Mattner established himself at the Adelaide Crows as a dashing half-back flanker who used his pace and endurance to generate drive from defence. After 98 games with the Crows, he was traded to the Sydney Swans prior to the 2008 season, a move that addressed Sydney's need for running power in the back half while offering Mattner a fresh start. He quickly adapted to the Swans' disciplined culture, evolving into a courageous defender who balanced lockdown accountability with the ability to peel off and rebound.

Mattner's legacy is defined by his reliability and defensive pressure, culminating in the 2012 Premiership. He is best remembered for a desperate, match-saving tackle on Hawthorn's Grant Birchall in the dying stages of the 2012 Grand Final, an effort that halted a dangerous attacking chain and helped secure the flag. Forced into retirement midway through 2013 due to a degenerative hip condition, Mattner departed the game as a respected 200-game player who maximised his potential through sheer work rate before transitioning into coaching.
