Bio
Recruited from Scotch College, Martin Ratz was a pivotal figure in University's inaugural VFL squad in 1908. A clever and opportunist rover with a sharp eye for the big sticks, he immediately made his mark by becoming the club's first-ever leading goalkicker, booting 25 majors in their debut season. Ratz provided a consistent attacking threat over his three years with the Students, averaging better than a goal a game—a high strike rate for a follower in that defensive era. Like many of his amateur teammates, his promising football career was secondary to his professional aspirations, and he retired from the VFL after the 1910 season to pursue a career in medicine.
