Recruited from VFA club Sandringham after being named the competition's recruit of the year, Marty Lyons chose Melbourne over St Kilda and made an electrifying start to his VFL career. The 183cm forward burst onto the scene in Round 1, 1975, booting four goals on debut and going on to win the Demons' Best First Year Player award after a promising 19-game rookie season. Despite this breakout start, Lyons struggled to cement a regular spot in the senior side over the following two years and was cleared back to the Zebras midway through 1977. While his VFL career was brief, he established a significant legacy at Sandringham as a premiership player and captain, and is widely recognised by modern footy fans as the father of AFL midfielders Jarryd and Corey Lyons.
