Bio
Recruited from the North Ballarat Rebels with pick 56 in the 2007 National Draft, Matt Austin was a classy midfielder and half-forward whose time at the elite level was cruelled by injury. A Stawell junior, Austin possessed excellent foot skills and was notably strong overhead for his size, attributes that excited the Lions' recruiters during a rebuilding phase. However, his durability was tested immediately, with an Achilles complaint ruining his first season before he finally earned a debut in Round 9, 2009. While he managed to break into the senior side for sporadic appearances over the next few years, persistent setbacks—including back issues and a severe leg injury—prevented him from cementing a regular spot in the 22. Despite showing genuine potential as a versatile utility who could use the ball well, Austin was unable to get a clear run at the game and was delisted at the end of 2011.
