Bio
An imposing figure who stood 190cm—a giant stature for the 1930s—Matt Cave was a ruckman and key position player recruited from Yarraville. He commenced his VFL career with Footscray, playing ten games before crossing to St Kilda during the 1933 season to bolster the Saints' follower division. While he added another 14 senior appearances at the Junction Oval, Cave eventually returned to the VFA where he enjoyed his greatest success. After a second stint at Yarraville, he transferred to Williamstown and played a starring role in the club's celebrated 1939 premiership, helping the Seagulls become the first team to rise from wooden spooners to premiers in a single year. His football journey was ultimately curtailed in 1941 due to persistent injuries and work commitments with Mobil.
