Bio
Originally selected by Fremantle in the 2009 Rookie Draft from Claremont, Matt de Boer carved out a reputation as one of the league's most disciplined and self-sacrificing players. He established himself early as a high-pressure defensive forward, becoming a key component of Ross Lyon's game plan and playing a vital role in the Dockers' run to the 2013 Grand Final. Despite serving in the leadership group and being highly regarded for his professionalism, de Boer fell out of favour during Fremantle's difficult 2016 campaign and was delisted, seemingly marking the end of his time at the elite level.
However, Greater Western Sydney offered him a lifeline late in the 2016 National Draft, a decision that proved astute as de Boer reinvented himself in Sydney's west. He evolved from a defensive forward into the competition's premier run-with midfielder, renowned for his ability to quell the influence of the game's most explosive stars and momentarily revitalising the dying art of the hard tag. His uncompromising standards helped mature the Giants' developing list, and he retired at the end of 2022 as a highly respected 200-game player who squeezed every ounce of potential out of his career through relentless work rate and tackling pressure.
