Bio
Selected with pick 76 in the 2017 National Draft, Matt Guelfi arrived at Essendon from Claremont as a recruit ready for immediate senior football. Despite his late selection, he quickly found a spot in the side, debuting in Round 4 of the 2018 season and playing 15 games in his rookie year. Initially deployed as a utility capable of plugging holes in defence or through the midfield, Guelfi spent his formative seasons fighting to cement a permanent position, often relying on his tenacity and versatility to retain his spot on the list during periods of list turnover.
He eventually found his true calling as a high-pressure forward, where his relentless tackling and ability to negate rebounding defenders became integral to the Bombers' structure. His standing at the club elevated significantly during the 2022 season, where a career-best output saw him finish third in the Crichton Medal. A cult figure among fans for his selfless playing style and work rate, Guelfi matured into a disciplined senior leader, providing essential defensive balance and grit to the Essendon forward line over a consistent career.
