Bio
Recruited from Berwick, Matt Johnson was a tall utility who battled to command a regular spot in the Footscray lineup during the late 1970s. Standing 187cm, he offered key position height and broke into the side for his debut as an 18-year-old in 1977, showing early promise as a versatile option. However, he struggled to transition from a depth player to a senior regular, spending the majority of his five-year tenure at the Western Oval in the reserves. After missing the entire 1979 season at senior level, he managed brief cameos over the next two years but could not secure a permanent place in the 22, eventually departing the VFL scene after the 1981 season.
