Teams

Recruited from the Geelong Falcons with pick 21 in the 2001 National Draft, Matt Maguire emerged as a courageous key defender for St Kilda during the mid-2000s. Known for his fearlessness and ability to intercept mark by backing into packs, "Goose" was a central figure in the Saints' defence until a severe broken leg in 2006 significantly derailed his trajectory. The recovery process was lengthy, and by the time he regained fitness, he struggled to secure a permanent spot in Ross Lyon's stingy defensive unit, ultimately being squeezed out of the side during the club's dominant 2009 campaign.

Seeking regular senior football, Maguire moved to the Brisbane Lions via the 2009 trade period, where he successfully revived his career as a veteran leader in a developing backline. While he had lost some of his youthful athleticism, he reinvented himself as a physically imposing stopper who used his experience to marshal the defence. He played five seasons at the Gabba, adding valuable depth and mentorship to the squad, before persistent concussion issues and general wear and tear forced his retirement in 2015 with 170 games to his name.
