Bio
Recruited from West Torrens in the SANFL, Matt Rendell arrived at Fitzroy in 1981 and immediately established himself as a dominant force in the ruck. Renowned for his outstanding overhead marking and mobility, he was not just a tap ruckman but a significant presence around the ground who regularly pushed forward to hit the scoreboard. His on-field excellence was rewarded with back-to-back club champion awards in 1982 and 1983, and he was entrusted with the captaincy for three seasons, leading the Lions with distinction during a competitive era for the club.
Following a decorated tenure at Fitzroy that saw him named in the club's Team of the Century, Rendell crossed to the Brisbane Bears for a swan song season in 1992. Although his time in Queensland was limited to 13 games, his vast experience added stability to the developing list before he hung up the boots. Post-retirement, Rendell transitioned into a highly influential off-field career, becoming one of the game's most respected recruiting managers and playing a pivotal role in constructing list strategies for Adelaide and Collingwood.
