Bio
Recruited from the Eastern Ranges with pick 34 in the 2005 National Draft, Matt Spangher endured a unique career trajectory defined by resilience and near-misses before finally achieving ultimate success. A versatile key position player capable of swinging between defence and attack, he was known for his strong intercept marking and contest work, though persistent soft-tissue injuries frequently hampered his continuity. After struggling to cement a regular spot during five seasons at West Coast, he moved to Sydney in 2011 where he famously missed out on the 2012 flag as an emergency, a heartbreak he repeated after being traded to Hawthorn and named an emergency for the 2013 Grand Final. Spangher became a beloved cult figure at the Hawks and finally broke his premiership drought in 2014, playing a key role in the club's backline to earn a premiership medallion, eventually retiring in 2016.
