Bio
Recruited from the Murray Bushrangers, Matt Taberner entered the AFL via the rookie list, selected by Fremantle with pick 11 in the 2013 Rookie Draft. He developed into a key forward renowned for his elite aerobic capacity, often working hard up the ground to provide a bail-out option and taking strong contested marks. While his field play was often commanding, his career was occasionally hampered by inconsistent set-shot routines that drew scrutiny. Despite these challenges, Taberner established himself as the focal point of the Dockers' attack during his peak, leading the club's goalkicking in 2020 and 2021 and earning a place in the 40-man All-Australian squad.
His later years were disrupted by recurring back and hamstring injuries, which coincided with the rapid development of young key forwards Jye Amiss and Josh Treacy. With the next generation of tall targets cementing their places in the side, Taberner found himself on the fringes of the best 22, managing only sporadic appearances in his final campaigns. After 12 seasons and 125 games in purple, he was delisted by Fremantle at the conclusion of the 2024 season, departing as a Life Member who carried the forward line during the club's transition period.
