Teams

Recruited from the Sandringham Dragons with pick 8 in the 2006 Pre-Season Draft, Matt Thomas established himself as one of Port Adelaide’s most uncompromising midfielders. Known for his fearless attack on the ball and immense tackling pressure, he was the definition of a "hard nut" inside midfielder who often played tagging roles or burrowed into packs to win contested possession. His time at Alberton was frequently interrupted by injury—including a severe abdominal infection in 2007 that saw him lose 15kg—and suspension due to his aggressive style, but he remained a cult figure among Power fans for his relentless work rate.

Thomas’s career narrative is best defined by his resilience during the 2013 post-season. After being delisted by the Power, he famously won the Magarey Medal as the SANFL’s best and fairest player just days later, capping off a premiership year with Norwood. This dominant state-league form earned him an AFL lifeline from Richmond in the 2014 Rookie Draft. Described by coach Damien Hardwick as a "human wrecking ball," Thomas provided a mature body and defensive grit to the Tigers' engine room for two seasons before retiring in 2015.
