Teams

Born in Alice Springs and hailing from a prestigious Northern Territory footballing family, Matthew Ahmat was a speedy wingman and small forward who played his junior football with the Darwin Buffaloes. He joined the Brisbane Bears as a teenager, making his debut at just 17 years of age, but struggled to establish himself in a Robert Walls-coached side that demanded strict defensive accountability. After a stint in the SANFL with Norwood to regain form, Ahmat was thrown an AFL lifeline when the Sydney Swans recruited him with the first selection in the 1993 Mid-Season Draft. Despite the high draft status, he managed only two appearances for the Swans in 1994 before his top-level career ended, though his family's legacy continued in the league through his cousin, Robert Ahmat.
