Bio
Recruited from Hobart with pick number four in the inaugural 1986 VFL National Draft, Matthew Armstrong wasted little time establishing himself at Fitzroy. He developed into a tireless and industrious rover, renowned for his work rate and ability to accumulate possessions in the clinches. During a tumultuous period for the Lions, Armstrong served as a reliable engine room operator, a status solidified when he won the Percy Mitchell Medal as the club's best and fairest in 1990. Over eight seasons at the struggling club, he was one of their few consistent performers, often battling against the odds in a side regularly under siege.
Seeking a change of fortune as Fitzroy's financial and on-field situation deteriorated, Armstrong was traded to North Melbourne prior to the 1995 season. The move required him to adapt from being a primary ball-winner to playing a disciplined role within a star-studded midfield rotation under Denis Pagan. The transition proved successful, as he added experienced depth to the Kangaroos' squad. His career culminated in the ultimate fashion during his final season, where he played a valuable role in North Melbourne's 1996 premiership victory over Sydney, retiring with a premiership medallion to complement his individual accolades from his time at the Lions.
