Bio
A towering key defender recruited from the Eastern Ranges, Matthew Banks took a resilient path to senior football that saw him drafted by Essendon twice. Originally selected in the 1995 Pre-Season Draft, he was delisted without playing a senior game but remained with the club as a reserves top-up player, eventually earning a recall to the primary list in 1997 after dominating at the lower level. Standing 199cm and weighing over 100kg, Banks was a massive physical presence who was immediately thrown into the deep end, making his debut in the 1997 Anzac Day blockbuster against Collingwood where he manned Magpie star Sav Rocca. Remarkably, two of his three career games were played on Anzac Day in front of 80,000 fans, and his short tenure included daunting matchups against both Rocca and Adelaide icon Tony Modra. His final appearance in 1998 was cut short by a shoulder injury, and unable to break back into the Bombers' formidable premiership-calibre defence, he was delisted at the end of 1999 before continuing his career with Box Hill in the VFL.
