Recruited from the Eastern Ranges with pick 13 in the 2004 National Draft, Matthew Bate arrived at Melbourne as a highly touted junior prospect. A left-footed lead-up forward who occasionally rotated through the midfield, Bate was known for his strong overhead marking and elite endurance, attributes that allowed him to work tirelessly up the ground to accumulate possessions. While he was a reliable ball-winner who regularly hit the scoreboard, his lack of line-breaking speed and perceived inconsistency in applying defensive pressure often drew scrutiny during a lean era for the Demons.

Despite playing over 100 games and kicking nearly a goal per game, Bate struggled to cement a permanent role in the side during the latter stages of his career. He requested a trade to the Western Bulldogs following the 2011 season to seek greater opportunity, but the move failed to materialise. After falling out of favour under coach Mark Neeld and spending the bulk of 2012 in the VFL—where he won the Casey Scorpions' best and fairest—he was delisted, finishing his AFL tenure as a serviceable contributor who battled hard in a struggling team.
