Bio
Recruited from Glenelg, Matthew Bode holds a unique place in South Australian football history as a rare player traded directly between arch-rivals Port Adelaide and the Adelaide Crows. Initially selected by the Power in the 1997 National Draft, he struggled to cement a regular spot in a formidable lineup, prompting a move to West Lakes ahead of the 2001 season. This transfer allowed Bode to flourish, transforming him from a fringe player into a vital component of the Crows' forward setup, particularly during the club's finals campaigns in the mid-2000s.
Standing at just 176cm, Bode was the archetypal high-pressure small forward, renowned for his tenacity, tackling intent, and willingness to put his body on the line against larger opponents. While he possessed a clever goal sense, it was his defensive work rate inside the forward 50 that endeared him to the coaching staff and supporters alike. He enjoyed a career-best campaign in 2006, playing every game and polling well in the club champion award, but persistent injuries eventually took their toll. After battling knee issues, Bode retired at the end of 2007, leaving the game as a respected clubman who maximised his natural ability through sheer work ethic.
