Bio
Recruited from Xavier College, Matthew Bourke was a high-marking forward who faced the unenviable challenge of breaking into Hawthorn's powerhouse lineup during their golden era. He made his senior debut in 1989 but was stuck behind a wall of legendary names and could not retain his spot in the premiership-winning side. After being delisted, he was thrown a lifeline by Fitzroy, who selected him with the third pick in the 1991 Pre-Season Draft. Bourke showed glimpses of his aerial ability and goal sense by booting two goals in two games for the Lions, but he could not cement a regular place in the senior 22, eventually departing the AFL to forge a decorated career as a premiership captain with Old Xaverians in the amateur leagues.
