Bio
Recruited from Woodville-West Torrens in the SANFL, Matthew Broadbent was selected by Port Adelaide with pick 38 in the 2008 National Draft. He developed into a reliable running defender who could also rotate through the midfield or drift forward when required. Renowned for his booming right boot, Broadbent provided the Power with significant drive from the half-back line, using his kicking penetration to clear defensive zones and set up attacking chains. His capacity to convert from outside fifty was a key weapon, perhaps best exemplified by his match-sealing goal against Adelaide in Showdown XXXIII.
Broadbent became a key figure in Port Adelaide's defence during the Ken Hinkley era, resulting in his elevation to the leadership group. He was particularly influential during the club's finals campaigns in 2013 and 2014, offering composure and rebound. However, the latter stages of his career were derailed by persistent foot injuries, which forced him to miss the entire 2018 season. Although he fought his way back into the senior side in 2019, he was delisted at the end of that year, concluding an 11-season tenure at Alberton as a loyal servant who played 171 games for his home state club.
