Bio
Recruited from the Dandenong Stingrays with pick 5 in the 2011 National Draft, Matt Buntine was a foundation player for Greater Western Sydney whose career was defined by resilience in the face of significant injury setbacks. A courageous defender known for his ability to intercept and fearlessly back into packs, Buntine's willingness to put his body on the line often came at a personal cost, with his time at the club interrupted by a punctured lung, a knee reconstruction, and concussion issues. While these interruptions prevented him from consistently fulfilling the high potential of his draft selection or cementing a permanent spot in a star-studded backline, he remained a vital cultural figure at the Giants, serving in the leadership group for four seasons. He departed the club at the end of 2021 as a highly respected clubman who provided reliable depth and mentorship throughout the Giants' formative years.
