Recruited from North Adelaide in the SANFL, Matthew Campbell was a foundation player for the Brisbane Bears upon their entry into the VFL in 1987. A dashing wingman known for his speed and line-breaking ability, he became a key figure in the side during its difficult formative years, playing in the club's historic first match against North Melbourne. His sharp reflexes and athleticism earned him a unique place in representative football history, as he was twice selected to play as goalkeeper for Australia in the International Rules series against Ireland. Campbell remained a loyal servant to the expansion club for seven seasons, departing in 1993 as the last remaining member of the original Bears squad to leave the playing list.
