Bio
Recruited from South Fremantle with pick 12 in the 1993 National Draft, Matthew Capuano established himself as a vital component of North Melbourne's powerhouse sides of the 1990s. An athletic ruckman known for his diligent tap work and ability to cover the ground, he provided the structural stability that allowed teammate Corey McKernan to play his dynamic ruck-rover role. Capuano's disciplined performances were instrumental in the Kangaroos' 1996 and 1999 premiership victories, cementing his legacy at Arden Street despite constantly battling knee injuries that frequently interrupted his momentum.
Following the 2000 season, Capuano was traded to St Kilda as the Kangaroos looked to ease salary cap pressure and the Saints sought an experienced head for their young list. However, his tenure at Moorabbin was marred by form and fitness struggles. His career came to an abrupt and somewhat controversial end in May 2003 when he was delisted mid-season by coach Grant Thomas, becoming a high-profile casualty of the club's aggressive youth policy. Post-retirement, Capuano remained in the system as a respected ruck coach and assistant for several AFL clubs.
