Recruited via the 2019 Pre-Season Supplemental Selection (SSP) from the Dandenong Stingrays, Matthew Cottrell entered the AFL with a point to prove after being overlooked in the national draft. The grandson of former Carlton player Len Cottrell, he utilised his elite aerobic capacity to carve out a niche as a high-pressure half-forward and wingman capable of covering immense ground. While initially playing on the fringe of the senior side, Cottrell endeared himself to the Carlton faithful and coaching staff through his selfless "gut running" and defensive application. Transforming from a rookie-listed long shot into a reliable structural component under Michael Voss, he established himself as a fixture in the Blues' lineup, valued highly for the unrewarded running patterns that often go unnoticed on the stat sheet.
