Originally listed by St Kilda as a teenager without making a senior appearance, Matthew Dent had to wait until the 1994 Pre-Season Draft to formally launch his career with Fitzroy. Arriving from Wodonga, he served the Lions with distinction as a defender during the club's tumultuous final three seasons in the AFL. When the Lions merged with Brisbane at the end of 1996, Dent was not among the group that headed north; instead, he remained in Melbourne and was recruited by the Western Bulldogs, where he became a key component of a rising squad under Terry Wallace.

A versatile operator who was primarily used across half-back but could fill various utility roles, Dent played a significant part in the Bulldogs' successful campaigns during the late 1990s, including appearances in the back-to-back Preliminary Finals of 1997 and 1998. He was known for his disciplined approach and ability to play on both tall and small forwards, offering steady rebound from defence. After falling out of the senior rotation at the Whitten Oval in 2000, he was thrown a lifeline by Hawthorn for the 2001 season. He added eight games to his tally with the Hawks, providing experienced depth before retiring as a respected journeyman who had represented three Victorian clubs.
