A former tennis player who turned his attention to football late in his youth, Matthew Egan was selected by Geelong with pick 62 in the 2004 National Draft and rapidly evolved into one of the league's most reliable key defenders. Operating primarily at centre half-back, he was renowned for his closing speed, disciplined spoiling, and ability to shut down dangerous opponents, a skillset that earned him All-Australian honours in 2007. His career remains one of recent football's more unfortunate tales; after playing every game of the Cats' dominant 2007 campaign, he suffered a fractured navicular bone in Round 22, causing him to miss the subsequent premiership victory. Despite spending the next two seasons on Geelong's list attempting to rehabilitate the foot, Egan was unable to return to the field and was forced into premature retirement, leaving a legacy defined by his meteoric rise and the cruel timing of his exit.
