Bio
Recruited from Ballan with an early selection in the 1988 National Draft, Matthew Francis was a mobile key position prospect whose time at Richmond was severely hampered by persistent injuries. Managing just a handful of senior appearances over six seasons at Punt Road, the 196cm utility was traded to Collingwood in 1996 in a direct swap for Robert Powell, a move designed to offer both players a fresh start. Francis found greater continuity at Victoria Park, where he was utilised primarily as a supporting tall forward and relief ruckman capable of covering ground effectively. His most productive football came during the 1997 season, where he settled into a niche as a third tall option alongside the Rocca brothers, finally enjoying a run of consistent match play before eventually departing the league at the end of 1998.
