Selected by Collingwood with pick 48 in the 2014 National Draft, Matthew Goodyear arrived from the Calder Cannons as a midfielder renowned for his elite endurance and burst of speed. After spending the entire 2015 season developing in the VFL, he made his AFL debut in the opening round of the 2016 season against Sydney and retained his place for the following week's match against Richmond. However, he was unable to consolidate a regular spot in the senior lineup and returned to the state league for the remainder of the year, ultimately being delisted by the Magpies at the end of 2016 after just two senior appearances.
