Recruited from Kaniva, Matthew Hogg began his AFL journey with Footscray, where he served as a serviceable utility between 1988 and 1991. Seeking a fresh start, he crossed to Carlton ahead of the 1992 season, a move that ultimately defined his career. Under the tutelage of David Parkin, Hogg transformed into one of the competition's premier defensive midfielders, relying on elite fitness and unwavering discipline to shut down dangerous opponents rather than flashy ball-winning ability.

Hogg became a vital structural component of the dominant mid-90s Blues lineup, culminating in his contribution to the 1995 premiership victory. His time at Princes Park earned him a reputation as a selfless team player, often battling through chronic injuries that hampered his output in later years. Although he sadly missed the 1993 Grand Final due to injury, his resilience and specific role-playing ability made him a cult figure among the Carlton faithful until his retirement in 1999.
