A highly rated junior from Subiaco, Matthew Johnson experienced a surprising slide on draft night in 2021, eventually taken by Fremantle with the opening pick of the second round after the Dockers executed a live trade to secure him. A tall, composed midfielder with the physical attributes to impact contests and the agility to navigate traffic, Johnson spent his first season developing in the WAFL before making his AFL debut in 2023. While his early opportunities were often managed via the substitute vest, he steadily adapted to the tempo of senior football, utilising his 193cm frame to become a reliable link player and contested ball winner. By 2026, Johnson had cemented his place in Fremantle's midfield rotation, providing crucial size and polish alongside the club's established on-ball brigade.
