Bio
A product of the GWS Giants Academy and the rich football territory of the Riverina, Matthew Kennedy entered the AFL as a first-round selection in the 2015 National Draft. Despite showing early promise, he found opportunities scarce within the Giants' star-studded midfield, playing just 19 games over two seasons before seeking a trade to Carlton ahead of the 2018 season in search of regular senior football. His early tenure at Princes Park was marred by injury and form struggles, culminating in him being delisted at the end of 2020 and re-selected via the rookie list. This lifeline sparked a significant career turnaround, as Kennedy reinvented himself as a hard-nosed contested ball-winner, enjoying a breakout 2022 campaign where he became a key pillar of the Blues' engine room.
Known for his physical size, stoppage craft, and strong overhead marking ability, Kennedy often played a hybrid role between the midfield and half-forward line when the Blues' on-ball rotation was at capacity. Despite his resurgence, salary cap pressure and list management decisions saw him traded to the Western Bulldogs following the 2024 season. Now at his third club, the big-bodied midfielder brings significant experience and depth to the Bulldogs, looking to secure a permanent spot in the centre square after crossing the 100-game milestone during his time in navy blue.
