Bio
Recruited from Mildura, Matthew Knights entered the VFL as a 17-year-old and quickly established himself as the centrepiece of Richmond’s midfield. A classy left-footer with exceptional vision and disposal skills, he was a prolific ball-winner who could dictate the tempo of a match and damage opposition teams with his precise delivery inside 50. Although often highlighted for his outside polish, Knights was a courageous competitor who consistently put his head over the ball, securing his standing as one of the competition’s elite centremen throughout the 1990s. His individual excellence was recognised with Jack Dyer Medals as the club's best and fairest in 1990 and 1992, along with All-Australian selection in 1998.
Knights led the Tigers as captain from 1997 to 2000, guiding the club through a challenging era before handing the leadership duties to Wayne Campbell. He remained a loyal one-club player, retiring in 2002 after 278 games in the yellow and black. His legacy at Punt Road was solidified with his induction into the Richmond Hall of Fame and his selection on the interchange bench in the Tigers’ Team of the Century, cementing his reputation as one of the most skilled and consistent midfielders in the club's history.
