Honours

Taken with the first selection in the 2007 National Draft—a pick secured after the infamous 'Kreuzer Cup' match between Carlton and Melbourne—Matthew Kreuzer arrived at Princes Park with immediate pressure to perform as a cornerstone of the Blues' rebuild. Unlike traditional stationary ruckmen, Kreuzer played like an oversized midfielder, earning a reputation for his elite follow-up work at ground level and ferocious tackling pressure. Dubbed "The Tractor" for his work rate and willingness to do the unglamorous things, he became a unique tactical weapon who could win the hit-out and then act as a fourth rover at the stoppage.

Despite his immense talent, Kreuzer's career was frequently interrupted by significant setbacks, including multiple knee reconstructions, foot injuries, and a heart scare that kept him sidelined for extended periods. His resilience, however, endeared him to the Carlton faithful, culminating in a standout 2017 season where he was named in the All-Australian squad. While his body ultimately let him down—forcing his retirement early in the 2020 season after 189 games—he remained a beloved figure at the club, transitioning immediately into a ruck coaching role to mentor the next generation of Blues talls.
