Making his debut in 1984, Matthew Larkin quickly established himself as a vital cog in the North Melbourne midfield during a period of significant transition for the club. A courageous and skilled rover who regularly pushed forward to hit the scoreboard, Larkin's consistency was highlighted by his three Syd Barker Medals won in the space of four years between 1985 and 1988. While the Kangaroos often struggled for finals consistency during his prime, Larkin remained the club's premier on-baller, renowned for his ability to win the hard ball and lead by example in the contest.

His standing at Arden Street was confirmed when he succeeded the legendary Wayne Schimmelbusch as club captain in 1990, a role he held for three seasons before passing the baton to Wayne Carey. Despite his instrumental role in bridging the gap between the dominant sides of the 1970s and the 1990s, Larkin's career was curtailed by injury, forcing his retirement at the end of the 1994 season. Although he missed out on the premiership success that followed later that decade, he remained a pivotal figure off the field, eventually returning to serve as the club's president during a critical financial period in the late 2000s.
