Stats
Bio
A highly rated Tasmanian junior recruited from Glenorchy, Matthew Mansfield endured a frustratingly stop-start career at the top level defined by significant injury setbacks. Taken by Footscray with pick 19 in the inaugural 1986 National Draft, he did not make his senior debut until late 1991 due to a combination of initial homesickness and a severe ankle injury that wiped out an entire season. He found his rhythm in 1992, holding down a spot across the half-back line and playing in three finals as the Bulldogs pushed deep into September, but a broken hand in 1993 halted his momentum once again. Mansfield was delisted at the end of that year and, despite being thrown a lifeline by Fitzroy in the 1994 pre-season draft, opted to return to state league football where he became a standout performer for Glenorchy and Werribee.
