Bio
Recruited from South Adelaide with pick 56 in the 1992 National Draft, Matthew Powell was a utility player who split his time between defence and the midfield. His start at AFL level was physically punishing, notably suffering concussions in his first two appearances for the Crows in 1993. Despite showing promise as a hard-at-it ball winner, Powell struggled to cement a regular spot in a strong Adelaide lineup, managing just 16 games over three seasons before being delisted. He subsequently carved out a distinguished career in the SANFL, crossing to Sturt where he became a club great, famously winning the Jack Oatey Medal as best on ground in the Double Blues' drought-breaking 2002 premiership victory. He is the father of North Melbourne midfielder Tom Powell.
