Recruited from South Adelaide with pick 37 in the 1992 National Draft, Matthew Rogers established himself as one of Richmond's most reliable servants during a fluctuating era for the club. While he began his career as a crafty half-forward and winger with a sharp left foot, he eventually evolved into the quintessential utility player. His ability to adapt to team needs saw him plugged into various gaps across the ground, earning him a reputation as the Tigers' "Mr Fix-it" who could create play or negate opposition stars with equal proficiency.

His standing at Punt Road was solidified around the turn of the millennium, where he finished runner-up in the 2000 Jack Dyer Medal and earned selection for Australia in the International Rules series. In the latter stages of his career, Rogers reinvented himself as a disciplined small defender, often tasked with tagging dangerous opposition forwards. He retired at the end of the 2004 season, falling just four games short of the 200-game milestone, but departed as a widely respected figure known for his consistency and understated leadership within the playing group.
