Arriving at Victoria Park from Preston RSL, Matthew Ryan was a diminutive rover and forward pocket who established himself in the Collingwood lineup during the mid-to-late 1980s. The cousin of fellow Magpie Michael Ryan, he showed early promise as a goal-kicker but eventually found himself on the fringes of the squad, departing the club just prior to the famous 1990 premiership campaign. His subsequent career was defined by short stints as a journeyman interstate, first selected by the Sydney Swans with the third pick in the 1990 Pre-Season Draft, followed by a move to the Brisbane Bears where he added experience to a raw, developing list. Ryan retired after the 1992 season, remembered as a handy goal-sneak who managed to extend his career across three clubs during a transitional era for the national competition.
