Bio
Arriving at Geelong as a father-son selection in the 1997 AFL Draft, Matthew Scarlett followed in the footsteps of his father John to become one of the club's greatest ever players. He revolutionised the role of the full-back, transforming it from a purely negation-based position into an attacking weapon. Renowned for his ability to beat his direct opponent one-on-one, Scarlett was equally damaging when peeling off to intercept marks and rebound the ball through the corridor, often starting offensive chains from deep in defence with his composure and precise foot skills.
A central pillar of the Cats' dynasty, Scarlett played a crucial role in the 2007, 2009, and 2011 premierships. He is perhaps best remembered for his quick thinking in the dying moments of the 2009 Grand Final, where his desperate toe-poke in the centre square set up the match-winning goal against St Kilda. A six-time All-Australian and best and fairest winner, he retired in 2012 as a one-club player and is widely regarded as the greatest defender of the modern era.
