Bio
Selected with pick six in the 2013 National Draft, Matthew Scharenberg arrived at Collingwood as a highly rated prospect from South Australia, touted for his elite intercept marking and composure across half-back. His career, however, became defined by persistent and devastating setbacks, most notably three separate anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstructions that severely restricted his continuity. When fit, particularly during a promising stretch in 2018, he demonstrated the high-level defensive reading of the play and efficient ball use that had justified his early draft selection. Unable to secure a permanent spot in the senior side amidst the recurring knee issues, Scharenberg was delisted by the Magpies at the end of the 2020 season, departing the AFL as a talented defender whose potential was largely curtailed by injury.
