Bio
Recruited from QAFL club Mayne as a zone selection, Matthew Simpson was a diminutive midfielder who represented a rare local success story for the Brisbane Bears during their chaotic formative years. Despite a short nine-game VFL career restricted to the 1988 season, the Queenslander proved he could match it at the highest level with a standout 22-disposal performance against Richmond that earned him two Brownlow Medal votes. Following his delisting at the end of 1989, Simpson moved to South Australia to play for West Adelaide, where he unwittingly became the centre of one of the SANFL's most controversial moments—the infamous 1991 Grand Final brawl triggered when he was knocked unconscious behind play by North Adelaide's Steven Sims.
