Bio
Recruited from Swan Districts in Western Australia, Matthew Spencer was a tall key defender whose AFL opportunities were severely limited by the extraordinary strength of Geelong’s backline during their emerging dynasty. Drafted with pick 42 in 2003, he developed into a reliable stopper at state league level, eventually winning the Cats' reserves Best and Fairest in 2005. He finally earned a senior call-up in Round 11, 2006, where he was immediately handed the massive task of manning Essendon star Scott Lucas, performing admirably in a comfortable Geelong victory. Despite his competence, he managed just one more senior game as formidable teammates like Matthew Scarlett and Tom Harley locked down the defensive posts. Spencer remained a vital contributor to the club’s depth, anchoring the defence in the Cats' 2007 VFL premiership side before being delisted and returning to the WAFL, where he went on to become a premiership player with his original club.
