Bio
Recruited from Wagga Wagga via the rookie list, Matthew Suckling overcame a slow start to his career to establish himself as one of the league's most damaging field kicks. Operating primarily off a half-back flank or wing, his elite left boot became a critical tactical weapon for Hawthorn, allowing the side to break defensive zones with precision and distance rarely seen in the modern game. His tenure at Waverley Park was defined by resilience; after the heartbreak of missing the entire 2013 premiership season due to an ACL rupture, he returned to play a vital role in the Hawks' back-to-back flag triumphs in 2014 and 2015.
Suckling exercised his rights as an unrestricted free agent to join the Western Bulldogs ahead of the 2016 season, bringing premiership experience to a developing list. He played 17 games in his debut year at the Kennel, helping propel the club toward the finals, but injury misfortune struck again in September, causing him to miss out on the Bulldogs' historic Grand Final victory. He remained a key distributor and veteran mentor for the Dogs for four more seasons, famously celebrating his 150th game with a goal from outside 50, before persistent soft-tissue issues forced his retirement at the conclusion of the 2020 season.
